Video Fairfax

The Arts Council of Fairfax County facilitates a film and new  media program for students in grades K-12 from Fairfax County  Public Schools. The goal of the program is to help educate and inspire students about the film and media industry.

Video Fairfax is a program facilitated by the Arts Council of Fairfax County, which features  workshops, a competition, and an awards night for students of Fairfax County Public Schools.

The Video Fairfax competition began in 1991 in order to promote student interest in video  production by encouraging them to gain more experience in working with the video art medium and exploring creative ideas for the utilization of film. Ultimately, the competition seeks to leave students with a sense of personal accomplishment.

Dubbed as “Oscars Night for Fairfax County Youth”, the annual Video Fairfax Awards Program is held in the theater of the Ernst Community Cultural Center of Northern Virginia Community College and features a reception and awards ceremony.  Special guests from around the community are invited to emcee and help present cash awards, trophies, plaques, and certificates in four age group categories.  First, second and third prizes, as well as honorable mentions, are available in all four awards divisions.  Film clips of all the finalists, as well as the entire winner’s videos, are all viewed at the Awards Program.

  • A competition with awards and cash prizes in four awards divisions: Grades K-3, Grades 4-6, Middle School, and High School.
  • A workshop with a special hands-on opportunity for teachers and students from all grade levels to learn more from video professionals.
  • An opportunity for students to be involved in a project, either alone or in a team, which gives them a creative outlet and a chance to express themselves in the medium of film and video.  In that way, the competition achieves its goal – to give students a sense of personal  accomplishment.
